Ridge Running the AT

0 Comments:

An old photo that I recently found from a backpacking trip several years ago. This is from the first day, after climbing up to the top of Annapolis Rocks, a great rock climbing site on the Appalachian Trail (AT) in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland. Behind my buddy Aaron you can see Frederick Valley, site of a lot of skirmishing during the Civil War.

I grew up hiking around these hills. My Quaker summer camp, Camp Catoctin, was on the other side of the mountain from Camp David, the presidential retreat. Marine One used to come in on final approach over our pond. I used to wonder what the Secret Service and Marines thought as they passed over our camp... "Look at the pacifist freak children! Let's light 'em up!"

Aaron just finished his second year of law school. As you can see here, he is reading. Probably a trail guide, but nevertheless, it is a harbinger of his future chosen profession. With all that good clean air and beautiful scenery, he's got his nose in a book. :)

Here's another photo from that trip. We caught the perfect weekend in early autumn. The foliage was amazing and the trails weren't too crowded. The only jarring note was that it was deer hunting season and our early morning wake up calls from our ridgeline camps were the blasts of shotguns and rifles from downhill.
