I got back on Sunday night from a wedding in the Caribbean. I flew 10,000 miles, got a decent tan (the sun at 13° latitude is pretty strong and loaded with burning UV goodness), and watched one of my oldest friends from 5th grade tie the knot. All within 40 hours. The wedding was by the beach at a small and private hotel on the western coast of Barbados.

In addition to Mike and Julie, there were 15 family and close friends in attendance. It was a small group and whole lot of fun. After dinner at a restaurant 30 feet from the surf, all the ladies decided to wade into the water to get some relief from the heat. Peaches, Julie's grandmother, is quite a daredevil - she was urging her fellow mermaids onwards and telling them to tuck their hems into their panties if they didn't want to ruin their dresses.

Other things witnessed that will never be seen again include a cardiovascular surgeon with over 30 years of "stop smoking" admonishment, puffing merrily away on the first and last Cuban cigar of his life. "Nobody lives forever," he said with a smile.

My only regret is that I didn't take more time off and stick around on the island for an additional day or two. But I was lucky compared to some others. Joe, Mike's older brother, flew in at 2 PM on Saturday for a 5 PM wedding after being on call for 48 hours in a neurosurgery ward in Boston. He flew out the next day at 1 PM and had another surgery scheduled for an hour after he landed back in Beantown. Yikes.

I'm glad I work with computers -- it's far easier to pull the plug and go home. Well, enough rambling. I picked out the five best digital camera shots from the wedding and ran them through Photoshop:

The Wedding Ceremony

The Neimat Family

The Robbins Family

Cocktails at Daphne's

Sunset on the Beach

It was a beautiful wedding and an amazing weekend with friends. Congratulations to Mike and Julie!
