Waking up is a painful process. But there's only one day left to go. We run screaming out of the Holiday In Express because the hotel manager keeps crank calling us to check out of the room. Apparently, the cleaning staff leave every day at noon because they work in the afternoon at the adjacent hotel. He keeps calling us up and alternately making us feel guilty or threatening to have us knee-capped. Needless to say, I didn't pack very neatly and I may have put my toothbrush in my shoes, but there's only one day left to go.

The final leg home is pretty quiet. The scenery is familiar and we're all looking forward to sleeping in our own beds. Home is where you hang your hat. And your keys. Be it ever so messy, there's no place like home.

Passing Reagan National airport, the sun is out and joggers and bikers are all over the place. It's a beautiful Saturday afternoon which reminds me of one of the reasons why I love living in this city so much. It's green. Green, green, green. Trees everywhere. So we don't have a commanding downtown city skyline. But we don't need it. Seeing the Washington Monument is much more powerful for a resident coming home to roost than it is for a tourist coming to see the sights.

We pull up in front of our office on L Street. The trip officially ends here. The sun is starting to dip in the western sky but there's a few hours of daylight remaining. This was a great trip but now it's time to sit outside and bask in the sun.

We're home. Time to hang our hats, do some laundry, and enjoy a beautiful weekend. We're going back to the salt mines on Monday.
